The History of PPM
A neuromuscular orthotic was originally designed and used for treating TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome), and the pain associated with the syndrome, including clenching, headaches, and earaches. Patients with jaw problems who were being treated with a neuromuscular orthotic were finding they had increased upper body strength. The founder of PPM, Dr. Anil Makkar, was seeing incredible results in many of his patients who were being treated for jaw conditions. Patients were discovering that wearing their orthotic not only alleviated pain but also provided additional benefits of increased strength and improved balance. From these findings, the PPM was developed. The PPM combines the properties of a mouth guard to absorb the impact from a traumatic hit, or blow, while being designed at the most optimal position of the lower jaw.
Benefits of PPM
By helping to properly align and relax muscles in the face, the PPM mouth guard improves muscle recruitment and vertebrae alignment. The result: improved strength and balance.
Whether you're looking for better balance on the ice, a more fluid and powerful golf swing, a higher vertical leap on the basketball court or greater results from strength training, the PPM mouth guard can help you achieve your potential!
The Science Behind PPM
In 90 percent of the population, the lower jaw is not in an optimal position, which causes facial muscles to be "unhappy" where they are situated. The PPM is based on the concepts of neuromuscular dentistry, a science developed by Dr. Bernard Jankelson that incorporates the muscles, nerves, and supporting structures of the mouth, in order to improve jaw and muscle alignment. Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on the physical connection between the range of motion of these muscles and joints, and your body posture.
Your PPM certified dentist determines that best possible jaw position through computerized tracking of your jaw. A TENS (transculaneous Electro Neural Stimulation) machine is used to help relax your muscles, putting them in their most comfortable position. When your facial muscles are in this position, your PPM is fitted, thus returning your muscles to this relaxed position when the mouth guard is worn. When your jaw is in its optimal position, as it is when wearing your specifically made PPM, the muscles are no longer stressed, thus giving you the best bite along with the added benefits of improved balance, and increased upper body strength.
Success Stories:
Derrick Walser, Professional Hockey Player
"I've been using the PPM mouth guard and I've seen some noticeable improvements in my balance, and a large improvement in the pain in my right shoulder while doing certain exercises.
The exercised where I've seen the most improvement so far are the shoulder press, lunges, step-ups and especially curls with a straight bar-this was the biggest difference because I wasn't able to do them before because of the pain in my shoulder."
Garth McAdoo, Golfer
"As a golfer for the past thirty years I was constantly looking for an edge, technical changes and physical strengthening to improve my game. In the six weeks since getting my PPM I've dropped 2 strokes off my handicap to 6-7 and constantly shoot below these numbers. The increase in my upper body strength and the balance it gives me has brought my game to a new level. The balance it provides has improved both my putting and short game and my driving accuracy has improved 10 fold. Before getting the PPM, I always played with pain in my shoulders due to rotator cuff problems, I know play without pain and that has been a great unexpected benefit.
